There to help support and celebrate breast cancer survivorship, Joel Aronowitz, M.D., founder of the Breast Preservation Foundation and Clinical Chief of the Plastic Surgery Division at Cedars Sinai Medical Center, presented his recent Aesthetic Surgery Journal findings during the annual event’s Health Expo. With the Foundation’s mission centered on increasing awareness for skin-sparing mastectomy, Dr. Aronowitz shared his survey-based study findings with Expo visitors, showing how more than one-third of California board-certified breast surgeons still perform traditional mastectomy procedures despite the availability of new and advanced surgical techniques.

“If you are a woman diagnosed with breast cancer or know a woman who is planning to have a mastectomy, our message is to ask your surgeon about the modern aesthetic techniques currently available that can greatly aid women in the healing process and restore their sense of wholeness,” said Dr. Aronowitz. “With today’s skin-sparing techniques, women do not have to live with disfiguring scars resulting from traditional procedures.

“Most importantly to reassure women, medical evidence proves that a skin-sparing mastectomy does not affect a woman’s chances of disease recurrence. It saves breasts, restores lives and should definitely be the new standard of care,” Dr. Aronowitz added.

The Breast Preservation Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to the education of women for skin-sparing mastectomy or breast-conserving surgical treatment options. Through outreach and research, the Foundation’s mission is to inform patients of their option to receive skin-sparing procedures while encouraging the general surgery community to utilize these conserving approaches.
